Behind the story

The client

Auto Escola Bolão is a traditional drive school from Minas Gerais – Brazil. They came to us with an idea to develop a video that they could use constantly near holidays about road safety.

The client’s goal was to alert drivers, present the risks of a bad conduction and teach them how to avoid accidents on the roads. The theme of a holiday vacation was used as it’s really common to see tragedies and many accidents during those days.

The challenge for us consisted in creating a motion graphics animation capable of captivating the audience as well as sending the right message.

Family and Safety

It’s common to see shocking videos and ads created to shock and make the viewer afraid of the consequences of their actions. We don’t believe this is a good way to teach, so we went with an emotional script that talks about family and the safety you want them to have. This way we ran from a cliché shocking story to something more emotional and visually attractive.

Character Design

The emotional aspect is something we wanted to value in this project. As we talk about family we needed to have characters that would help us to trigger emotions and sympathy. André Flauzino, our illustration partner, created three characters to represent the family –  Dad, Mom and Son.

Fluid and Dynamic Motion

We started the animation with Fluid Actions and Dynamic Transitions of icons that represent Time, Routine and Energy. The magic of these transitions is how each element is created from the last one. Our solution was to work with frame-by-frame animation, so we can have a better control of both shapes and dynamics of the scene.

3D Elements

A point that made this animation so remarkable to us was the first mix of 2D and 3D elements. All the 3D objects, like the Family Car and the City, were created inside After Effects by organizing 2D layers on a 3D space, grouping them at the exact way to simulate a 3d object.

Each view was separated and rendered isolated, so we could compose them together later. The choice to build everything inside After Effects was to guarantee more control of the camera and of each element. It allowed us to have the creative freedom, changing certain angles and adapting the animation to be the best way possible.

Experiments and Innovation

We always like to innovate and explore different approaches for our projects. In this project, we used all kinds of animation – Frame by frame, 2D and 3D – and finding new ways to incorporate one style to another is what helped us to make this project unique.

The result was a joyful video, able to engage and at the same time to send a message.

A proof of it effectiveness and quality is that this animation was nominated for Best Motion Graphics Category at the Computer Artist IT Awards 2014.

Innovation is something we thrive in our methods, techniques and storytelling. A great project start with many challenges and overcoming them is what we love in our work.
